Hi, I’m Jennifer (she/her).

Jennifer Cao Affordable Virtual Therapy BIPOC ADHD Grief AnxietyToronto Ontario

What brings me to this work

My family arrived in Canada as refugees. I spent over a decade in demanding jobs before becoming a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and opening my practice.

My own transformative journey in therapy and diagnosis of ADHD emphasized the unique value of finding a therapist that understands and contextualizes your experiences, challenges and strengths.

My approach

Culturally responsive
Collaborative
Compassionate

I believe you are the expert when it comes to your life and what is right for you.

I’m direct and collaborative. My approach is rooted in anti-oppression and decolonization, with a sex and ace positive and trans/queer affirming lens. I recognize that stigma and structural barriers impact well-being, access to care and collective liberation. Working at your pace, we'll explore what resonates for your motivations and needs.

It is my belief that people aren’t broken; everyone is capable of growth, healing and creating the meaningful change they desire.

  • During one-on-one therapy, we’ll collaborate on what feels the most meaningful for you.

When we’re overwhelmed and feeling stuck, we can fall into a pattern of blaming ourselves for being “too much” and struggle alone. I offer non-judgemental and empowering space to discover new ways of connecting and experiencing everyday life.

    • Non-monogamy, polyamory affirming

  • It’s a common misconception that going to therapy is a result of struggling with an acute emotional crisis. In reality, people come to therapy for a wide variety of reasons.

    Some examples include:

    • Developing skills and strategies to manage everyday stressors

    • Finding support while making a life change

    • Navigating complicated relationship dynamics

    • Discovering direction and purpose

    • Processing difficult emotions and gaining perspective on challenging issues

    • Building self confidence and self awareness

Many people simply want a safe space to be heard. We can make sense of it together and go from there.

You can come to therapy with a specific issue in mind, or with uncertainty about where to start. Your reasons are valid and important. I welcome you to arrive just as you are.

  • I work with adults (18+) living in Canada.

I offer individual therapy and couples therapy.

My areas of focus include ADHD and neurodivergence, career and life transitions, perfectionism, relationship challenges, racial identity, grief and anxiety.

  • I am currently offering virtual appointments/video sessions.

If you prefer speaking on the phone (brain injury, wanting to walk outside as we speak etc.), I’m happy to accommodate.

Online therapy can be more accessible for many people, as it decreases travel time and makes it easier to fit into your schedule. However, it also means you’ll need a private and secure space with reliable internet access for our sessions.

To ensure privacy and confidentiality, all platforms used will be Personal Health and Information Act (PHIPA) secure.

  • I am available Monday to Friday.

Please contact me for more details.

  • I’m currently training with the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy (TIRP), an accredited educational program with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CPRO).

I’m a member of the Ontario Society of Registered Psychotherapists (OSRP) and my practice is regulated by their ethical standards.

I regularly meet with a clinical supervisor.

I’ve held peer support roles with the LGBT YouthLine, worked as a community organizer and completed a Masters of Inclusive Design, studying trauma-informed and intersectional research approaches.

  • Consultations aren’t a rigid, set format. If you’re feeling a bit nervous about booking a consultation call, that’s understandable. Being vulnerable and asking for help is a big step.

During our call, we’ll discuss what you’re looking for in therapy and what you want to achieve. I’ll outline how I work and answer questions about what that could look like with you. You decide what is most important for you to know about your potential therapist.

Please note that consultations are not therapy sessions. They are shorter conversations as an introduction to each other.

It’s completely acceptable to have a consultation and choose to not book further sessions. Feelings of trust and mutual connection are important. This is a part of the process, and you have the right to decide what feels like a good therapeutic fit for you.

  • This varies depending on your specific needs, goals and circumstances.

Relational therapy offers longer-term support through the process of building trust and establishing a relationship. Starting with weekly sessions is recommended.
